The public is invited to a two-day Solar Symposium, June 8 and 9, to celebrate Tompkins County Public Library's new state-of-the-art solar electric system. The 1430 photovoltaic panels installed on the roof of the library will lower utility bills, decrease the environmental impact of global warming and create less demand for fossil fuels. This system is the third largest photovoltaic installation and the first municipal application in New York.
A free symposium for building owners, architects, contractors, facility managers, planners, agribusiness and others interested in commercial applications of solar in new construction and major retrofits will take place in the Borg Warner Room of the library on June 8 from 2:00pm-4:00pm. A free homeowners symposium will take place on June 9th at the Women's Community Building from 10:00am-1:00pm.
Opening ceremonies will be attended by U. S. Congressman Maurice Hinchey, Barbara Mink, Chair, Tompkins County Board of Representatives, Alan Cohen, Mayor of Ithaca and other dignitaries on June 8th at 12:30pm at the Library. New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA) financial incentives for energy efficient projects will also be presented.
A free homeowners symposium will take place on June 9th at the Women's Community Building from 10:00am-1:00pm. A panel discussion: Leaving Smaller Footprints: New York's Energy Tightrope and What Homeowners Can Do About It, will explore energy efficiency strategies to reduce electric consumption and the viability of solar energy for residential applications. Solar exhibits, music, and refreshments will be included at the event.
