More Pacifica board members resign

June 13, 2001: Pacifica board chair David Acosta, hand-picked by former chair Mary Frances Berry as her successor, and Karolyn Van Putten, a close associate of former executive director Lynn Chadwick, announced their resignations from the Pacifica national board today. Their resignations, following the recent departures of board treasurer Michael Palmer and longtime New York board member Frank Millspaugh, leaves the Berry-era anti-community radio Pacifica majority with a narrow 7-5 majority on the Pacifica board.

The resignations follow a campaign of intense pressure by thousands of Pacifica listeners and community radio supporters nationwide. The lawsuits, pickets, letters, and direct actions are finally having an effect! Earlier today, a Pacifica attorney announced that a national board meeting scheduled for the end of this month in New York had been postponed. Two weeks ago Acosta had circulated a memo to board members announcing that new candidates - presumably supporters of the now dwindling Berry-era majority - would be nominated for the board at that meeting.
