TC Greens authorize, designate candidates

Author: Paul Houle

Topic: Local News

At a public meeting held Monday July 9, the Tompkins County Green Party adopted a formal constitution and authorized 12 candidates for the Green line -- by July 12 they turned in designating petitions with enough signatures to put them all on the ballot. The Greens will field candidates in four city council rates in the city of Ithaca, four county board races outside the city, and in three town board races in the town of Ithaca. In City Ward 2, Bryan Issacs will face off against David Whitmore (also seeking the Democrat line) in a first-ever Green primary.

Candidates who were registered Green as of the last election were able to get the Green line by simply filing designating petitions. Candidates registered independent or with another party had to be authorized by the party -- these candidates were screened by the election committee and authorized by a vote open to all registered Greens. The purpose of the process was to ensure that candidates reflect our values, are viable candidates, and can do the job of governing once in office.
