Georgia Greens endorse Gloria Bromell-Tinubu for Atlanta Mayor

The Georgia Greens' 2001 Annual Convention gave its endorsement to Gloria Bromell-Tinubu in her second bid for Mayor of Atlanta. Gloria was endorsed in her 1997 mayoral campaign by the Atlanta Greens who actively campaigned for her. In 1997, she took 14% of the vote even though she was outspent 30:1. Gloria Bromell-Tinubu, Ph.D., a native of South Carolina, is associate professor of Economics at Spelman College and member of the faculty since 1986. Appointed by Gov. Roy Barnes in 1999 to the State Board of Education, Gloria served the 5th Congressional District until she resigned to run for Mayor of Atlanta. Gloria received her PhD in Applied Economics and Master's in Agricultural Economics from Clemson University in 1986 and 1977. Her dissertation examined the financial stability of public water systems. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Howard University in 1974.

Gloria has a proven track record of public service as former co-chair of the Georgia Women's Political Caucus, former member of the State Committee for the Democratic Party, Atlanta mayoral candidate in 1997 and former member of the Atlanta City Council. While representing Council District 12 from 1994 to 1998, Gloria authored legislation creating the city's Neighborhood Deputies Program and Atlanta Cooperative Development Corporation. She spearheaded redevelopment plans for Metropolitan Parkway and Jonesboro Road. Gloria chaired the Council's Community Development/Human Resources Committee for two years and served on the boards of the Downtown Development Authority, the Urban Residential Finance Authority and the Atlanta Development Authority.

A member of Leadership Atlanta class of 1996, Gloria has received numerous honors and awards including Spelman College's "Fannie Lou Hamer Community Service Award." In 1998, the National Black Caucus of the teamsters honored her, and the Atlanta Business League named her among the "100 Most Influential Black Women" in Atlanta in 1996 and 1997.

In 1976, Gloria married Soji Tinubu, a Clemson graduate in civil engineering and moved to Atlanta the same year to start their family. They are the proud parents of four children, Ayo, Titilayo, Femi, and Tayo, ages 21, 19, 17 and 15 respectively.
