Ithaca says no to war

Author: Local Desk

Topic: Local Candidates

Last week, the City of Ithaca Common Council unanimously passed a resolution urging Hinchey, Schumer, and Clinton to vote against a U.S. invasion of Iraq. Ithaca is only the second city in the nation to have done so.

A similar resolution before the County Board of Representatives did not make it on the agenda at last night's county meeting. See who voted against it below.

A silent action will be held against the war on Oct 5; activists will meet at the corner of Buffalo and Tioga streets at 1:00 PM. Everyone is asked, if possible, to wear black clothes. Plain small posters stating "No war on Iraq" will be available but you can bring your own poster if you prefer.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 12th, as our now-annual Keep Space for Peace "action"....Details are still being finalized at Mission Control Central and will be released slowly, slowly, but surely. The "action"--sure to stun and inspire Tompkins County--will begin at the boat docks at the Farmer's Market (just off Route 13) at 1 p.m. on Saturday the 12th.City Council and County Board

The City of Ithaca Common Council has just now unanimously passed a resolution urging Hinchey, Schumer, and Clinton to vote against the U.S. invading Iraq. Ithaca is only the second city in the nation to have done so.

But a similar resolution before the COUNTY Board of Representatives did not even make it on the agenda at last night's county meeting. Here is how our county Reps. voted.

FOR putting the resolution on the agenda: Herrera, Koplinka-Loehr, McBean, Robertson, Penniman, Kiefer, Schuler, Joseph.

Against: Proto (R), Blanchard (D), Todd (R), Totman (R), Lane (D), Booth (D), Winch (R).

I don't have details on why Barbara Blanchard (bb35@cornell.edu, 277-1374), Michael Lane (844-8313), and Richard Booth (rsb6@cornell.edu, 272-6573), voted against putting the resolution on the agenda. But it might be worth writing and asking them since the resolution will be before them again in two weeks. It is also unclear whether the resolution will be passed even if put on the agenda.

Saturday October 5 Action

We will gather in front of the old post office (on the corner of Buffalo and Tioga Streets) at 1:00. Be there then if you would like to be involved in some last minute planning and to hear the scenario.

At 1:30, we will begin a single-file walk to and through the Commons where the Apple Festival will be underway.

At 2:00 some people are planning on participating in a die-in.

Everyone is asked, if possible, to wear black clothes. Plain small posters stating "No war on Iraq" will be available but you can bring your own poster if you prefer. The planned walk is silent and somber to underline the gravity of a planned war we are being told is inevitable.

Now is the time for us to work together to prevent a war on Iraq and everything that comes in response to such an attack.

Please pass this message on to friends and colleagues.

Keep space for Peace

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 12th, as our now-annual Keep Space for Peace "action"....Details are still being finalized at Mission Control Central and will be released slowly, slowly, but surely.

Detail #1 is the *most important*...The "action"--sure to stun and inspire Tompkins County--will begin at the boat docks at the Farmer's Market (just off Route 13) at 1 p.m. on Saturday the 12th.

Detail #2: We will be speaking out against U.S. war plans in the Middle East and how space is being used by the Pentagon to coordinate all war on earth.

What makes this all the more exciting is the context, worldwide, within which our local "action" takes place. See below for all the "actions" worldwide join together in a seamless web of growing power.
