Sept 25 meeting minutes

Topic: Local News

Thanks to Kathy Halton for writing these up.

1. Mark Dunau's report on his campaign. He has begun his walk of his district. Will start Friday from Geneva and walk to Auburn. He showed us an article in the Oneonta Daily Star, which portrays him as the anti-war candidate. A contact number if you want to walk with him is: 607-467-4034. Website is www.ruralparty.com.

2. Pete Meyers report on his campaign for Sheriff of Tompkins County. His campaign is going well. The Ithaca Times on page 3 this last week, had a good article on Pete, by Tye Wolf. Pete now has the support of the Ithaca Paraprofessionals, and would like to get the support of the UAW. The voter registration drive has now registered 285 voters in Tompkins County. The Cornell student groups want to do a drive, and people are going up Friday. Pete's main issues are: he is against jail expansion because it is too costly and law enforcement people will be pressured to fill it; he believes in alternatives to incarceration and restorative justice. He feels there are class issues re the Rockefeller drug laws' enforcement, and he also thinks that the local law enforcement people will have to stand up to pressure to attack civil liberties because of the anti-terrorist stuff.

3. Anna and Melissa from ICES at Ithaca College. Pete is planning a town meeting at IC on October 3rd. They cannot support a particular candidate at ICES, but they can invite someone to come and talk. There will be a voter reg. table Thursday from 10-2 PM. There are also other people doing voter registration.

4. Fundraiser. Victoria reports that it will occur Sunday, October 13th. She has rented the small pavilion at Stewart Park, which is not closed in. We're going to sell tickets for $10 each, since this is a fundraiser for Stanley Aronowitz , etc. It will begin at 5 PM and end at 830PM, with a movie at 7 PM. Stanley Aronowitz and Mary Jo Long will be coming. She needs help with phone calls.

5. October 26th there is a march on Washington DC against the war on Iraq. Buses are leaving at 1 AM Saturday at the library on Green Street. Tickets are available at Autumn Leaves and ABC Cafe for $42 round-trip. Contact Kathy or Bill Halton at haltonbk@aol.com or 273-0533. If anyone cannot go, but wants to support the cause, they can contribute money and someone else can go for them.

6. There is anti-war vigilling going on at the east end of the Commons on Wednesdays from 750-850AM. Bring your own sign. They may expand to two sites if more and more people come.

7. Progressive Festival - David Galezo is looking for someone to take over the planning of the festival, because he has done it for a while. People think it should remain a Green party event. Perhaps we might want it to happen twice a year, have a Spring Festival also.
